Getting Your Home Ready for Your Dog or Cat Adoption

Adopting a new dog, cat, or furry friend is an exciting experience, but you’ll want to prepare your home to make sure it’s safe and welcoming to your new family member. Here are some essential steps to get your home ready for your dog or cat adoption:

  • Pet-Proof Your Space: Just like baby-proofing, you’ll want to secure or remove anything that could harm your pet. Locate and address loose wires, ensure small objects that could be swallowed are out of reach, make sure that all harmful household chemicals are safely stored, and use childproof latches to keep cabinets closed.
  • Create a Dedicated Space: Dogs and cats benefit from having a place where they feel safe and can decompress, especially when they are in a new environment. Set up beds, cozy corners, or comfortable crates before your new friend arrives. You should also establish a specific area for feeding, as well as a litter box or designated potty area. Place these designated pet places away from high-traffic human areas to minimize stress and establish a routine.
  • Stock Up on Supplies: Before you bring your new dog or cat home, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. This includes food and water bowls, pet food, a collar and leash, toys, grooming tools, and any other specific items your pet might need.
  • Safety Measures: If certain areas of the house need to be off-limits to pets, install gates or barriers to establish clear boundaries. Check your home for toxic plants or dangerous chemicals that pets could accidentally ingest. If you’re planning on dog adoption, check the plants in your garden or landscaping to see if any of them could harm your new friend; plan to supervise your dog when outside to keep them safe.
  • Prepare Other Household Members: If you have children or other pets, prepare them for the new arrival. Teach them how to interact safely and respectfully with the new pet. If you are introducing a new pet to an already established one, ask our team about how to appropriately address introductions.
  • Veterinary Care: Identify a veterinarian and schedule a visit shortly after your pet’s arrival. It’s important to establish a health baseline and discuss an appropriate care routine. If possible, plan to bring your new pet to the vet’s office on a semi-regular basis, even when they’re not there to receive care. Bring treats and other high-reward items to help your pet associate the vet with positive experiences.

By following these steps, you can create a safe and loving environment for your new dog or cat, paving the way for a smooth and joyful transition into your home.
