LOST & FOUND

Losing your pet can be scary and overwhelming as pets are a part of our families. SPCA Westchester has resources to help reconnect you with your pet.  Take quick action if your pet is lost- do not wait to see if your pet returns on their own.  Following the steps below can help you recover your lost loved one.

Submit a Lost Pet Report. SPCA Westchester keeps a running list of reported lost animals and/or strays.

As soon as you realize your pet has gone missing, ask neighbors, family and friends to help search. When looking for your pet bring a leash, food/treat. If your dog is shy and lost, be careful about a search party. Even the average social dog can be wary of people trying to catch them and may get spooked being chased.

Owners should put up flyers within a few blocks of the neighborhood where your pet was last seen.  Flyers can be created on lostmydoggie.com where a free alert can be set up. Also post the flyers on the local Facebook websites. Nextdoor and other neighborhood sites or groups are also good places to post the flyer.

For shy dogs the flyer should state: Do Not Chase. Report sightings to [your phone number].  Sightings are the only way to pinpoint a location for food placement but also for a trapper to set a trap should one be needed.  Sightings will also help them determine where to put up more flyers.

For a lost cat that is an indoor cat or shy, place clothing, toys or their litter box outside your yard where he/she may smell them. Often times lost cast remain right around the house.

If your pet is microchipped, contact the company and have them put a “lost or stolen” alert on the pet’s microchip.
