Mobile Adoption Event Process
We are thrilled that you are considering adopting your new 4-legged best friend from SPCA Westchester! To ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible, we’ve outlined our procedures below. Please note, you must be 21 years of age or older to adopt.
Mobile Adoption Events are uniquely designed to make adoptions convenient in different areas of Westchester County and parts of Connecticut as well as spread awareness about our programs and services. These events are also wonderful opportunities to meet some of the adult residents that are available for adoption!
What to Expect:
– We are limited to the amount of animals we can bring on our vehicle. Meet and greets are on a first come, first serve basis based on the best match. We recommend you have a first, second and third choice of animals you would like to meet.
– Please fill out an application online beforehand and indicate if you are planning on attending a Mobile Adoption event and which animal you are interested in meeting. Please bring a print out of your application as well if possible.
-Upon arriving, check in at our Welcome Table to secure your place in line. If you did not bring your application, we can provide you with one. If you have already filled out an application online or in person at the SPCA, please call us at least 24 hours before the event to ensure we bring a copy of your application.
-The SPCA Mobile Adoption vehicle arrives approximately 30-60 minutes before the event to allow for set up. While you may arrive as early as you wish, check-in at the Welcome Table will begin 15 minutes before the scheduled event time.
-Expect a lot of people! And please be patient. There are usually more adopters than there are available animals to adopt. It is our aim to communicate effectively with all potential adopters so that you may also visit our Rescue Center to meet other adoptable animals if you cannot adopt that day at the event.
-We often get inquiries about cats on our unit. We try to bring our cats out whenever possible, but sometimes traveling can stress our feline friends. We recommend visiting our Rescue Center to meet with our passionate and skilled team members for cat adoptions.
-Once you have checked in, we will have carefully curated resources at our Welcome Table for you to learn more about the adoption process and tips about welcoming a new pet into your home.
Meet and Greets:
-Each potential adopter will have a 30 minute period of time in which to meet with an SPCA Adoption Counselor. In this setting, you can get time to hang out with your animal and ask questions while our team reviews your application.
-These meetings are one-on-one to allow adopters to have the time to ask questions and fully understand the process. Due to the nature of Mobile Adoption Events, it might not be possible to meet more than 1-2 animals that day.
Ready to adopt?
– Once you have had your meet and greet, you may be ready to adopt! If so, please anticipate about 15-20 minutes to process your paperwork etc. This will be done with a team member inside the Mobile Adoption Unit.
-If you have a meet and greet and but do not adopt that day, we will keep your application on file. Our Rescue Center is open 7 days a week with no appointments necessary.
